Rachel & Allison’s Moving Away Photo Session

I had the privilege of doing a photo session with Rachel and Allison a little while ago. They just recently moved away from good ol’ Winnipeg, and they had this cute idea to do some moving-away themed pictures. In addition, they also brought some other thoughtful props, like a picture from when they first met, letters that they had written to each other, and I believe also their wedding vows.

I got to know Rachel at work, and I always really enjoyed her easy going, down to earth, and non-judging nature. So, naturally it was also nice to meet Allison. I appreciated her genuine effort to get to know the person behind the camera, asking questions about my background and finding connections to each other. I’m sure we could have found a lot more to talk about yet!

Rachel and Allison, you made it easy for me to capture the love you have for each other. I wanted to capture genuine moments from an outsider’s perspective, and you gave me just that! I hope you will encounter many new great adventures in your new home.

Fall Photo Session with Melinda

I have been working on this fall photo session for a while, and I’m really excited to finally share it! My friend Melinda and I went to the Kilcona Off-Leash Dog Park this past November to catch the last fall vibes. We couldn’t have hoped for better weather! Melinda is a friend that I know from Mexico (ever since Kindergarten, to be exact!). She has been living in Manitoba, so it has been really nice to have the chance to reconnect. I truly enjoyed our time together, and Melinda was a breeze to photograph!

Naturally, when we spend time together, I am reminded of lots of memories that we share. We went through a mega Britney Spears phase together, dressing up and imitating her dance moves (I know, we were SUPER cool that way!) πŸ˜‰

One time we were playing that we were nurses, and we were at home all alone, when someone started knocking on our front door like there was no tomorrow, followed by desperately ringing our door bell, moving on to our garage door and testing if it was open… needles to say we were scared to death. To this day I’m not sure who it was, although I have a good idea.

Another time we had gone along with my mom in our long Mercury Grand Marquis car (which I always made fun of because it was as long as the Titanic). It had rained and suddenly our car was hydroplaning. Of course this was not a great situation to be in and thankfully my mom saved the whole situation by getting the car under control once again. What did Melinda and I do next? Yes, we just started laughing and laughing… You guessed it, my mom was surely not impressed with us.

I won’t give away the rest of our stories. But before I show you the pictures of my gorgeous friend Melinda, I have to mention how contagious her laughter is. I’m sure you could hear it from quite far away. Thank you for letting me take your pictures Melis!

At Home with Brad & Candice & Jesse

Here’s an “at home with” photo session that I shot a while ago. And I really mean a while ago. Back when I took these pictures this cute little stinker was beginning to dream about walking, but needed a lot of assistance still. Now he’s completely walking on his own! There was also no snow yet, when we took these pictures. Although, of course, we picked a super cold day, which was followed by a beautiful day! Doesn’t that always happen? All three of them were troopers though, and braved the cold weather for a couple of outdoor shots.

I’ve known Brad and Candice since Kevin and I started dating. We have enjoyed so many fun times as well as difficult times together, and we truly value their friendship. Come along Jesse and there’s even more excitement thrown into the mix. And my goodness, our dog Luna couldn’t agree more! She adores little Jesse! But really, what’s there not to love? Here’s a little glimpse into the lives of Brad, Candice, and Jesse. Thank you for letting me practice my photo shooting on you!

Photo Session: Saint-Boniface Cathedral

As promised, here are the rest of the pictures of my recent photo session with my cousin through marriage, Madeline. The other half of the photo session was shot at the forks. You can find that session here. Madeline suggested this place to me, which I am thankful for. I had never explored these cathedral ruins before, and therefore didn’t know how excellent they are for photo-shoots.

It’s funny how easy it is not to take the time to explore one’s own city. When I took my husband to Mexico the first couple of times, I visited some places that I had never seen before. It’s silly how it takes someone else visiting your country to see new things yourself.

It has been fun trying out different locations in Winnipeg for photo shoots. It is encouraging me to explore places that are new to me. However, shooting in new locations also comes with its challenges. Said challenges push me to learn though, so all is good.

The Saint-Boniface Cathedral

I researched some of the history of these cathedral ruins. It appears that there have been six churches built in this location between 1818 and 1971. (The information below is from this website).

  • The first church was built in 1818 when Father Provencher arrived. It was used as a chapel, residence, and school.
  • The second church was built in 1819 and was bigger than the first one, but was only completed in 1825, due to lack of funds.
  • The third church was built some time between 1832 and 1839. However, it was destroyed by a fire in 1860, along with all the mission’s historical records.
  • The fourth church was started by Bishop TachΓ©, and opened for worship in 1863. This church was even larger, but was torn down in 1909, because it was no longer big enough.
  • The fifth church was built by Archbishop Langevin. Yet again, the church was destroyed by a fire in 1968. However, its outer walls remain standing strong, and a sixth church was added in 1972.

At Home with the Brauns

I am so thankful for friends who are willing to be my models so that I can continue to keep practicing my photography. I’m especially thankful for this couple, as they have become such good friends of ours. We started hanging out a lot when Kevin and I started dating, and it has been such a blessing to have walked beside each other through many life changes. Now we get to witness them being amazing parents to the sweetest little girl. Thank you for opening up your home to me, and for the warm tea, cookies, and conversations that followed after the session.

Maddie Grunging it up at the Forks

img_1592-2

I had the privilege to do a photo shoot with my cousin (through marriage) at the forks recently. She was so easy and fun to work with! It was a cold day outside, but that didn’t stop us! We also took some pictures at the St. Boniface Cathedral ruins. I will post those pictures some time in the near future.

Madeline is such a gifted and creative person, and has a heart of gold. She has been such an encouragement to me on my own journey of trying out new things, and is always ready to share helpful tips.

Madeline is a fantastic model (seriously, it comes so naturally to her!) and a seamstress. She is studying to become a designer, which I have no doubt she’ll rock at, having her creative spirit. Thank you for such a fun photo session Maddie. I look forward to collaborating with you again in the future! Make sure to follow her on her Instagram account.

Celi at the Forks

img_1148-3

I was SUPER lucky to have one of my best friends from Mexico visit me just over two weeks ago. Let me tell you, this girl is a blast to be around! She can light up the whole room with one of her hearty laughs. She will always lend you a listening ear and has a heart of gold. She is a true gem.

She had the great idea to go to the forks for a hangout, which of course gave us the opportunity for a little photo-shoot. We froze our butts off, and enjoyed some fresh and hot cinnamon mini donuts. This is my beautiful friend Arcelia. πŸ™‚

End of Summer Photoshoot

img_0986-2

A couple of weeks ago my friend and I did a photo-shoot, capturing the last bit of summer. Now many trees are almost bare! I’m absolutely loving fall and the rich earthy colours that come with it.

I have really been enjoying taking more pictures of people. I look at the outcome and know that my picture taking/editing skills are far from perfect, but I’m not letting that stop me. I’m just learning. πŸ™‚ Having said that, do any of my lovely readers have any photography advice for me? I would like for my pictures to turn out a little sharper. Any suggestions? How do you avoid getting the subject blurry?

Without further ado, here is my friend Chantelle, who was kind enough to be my photography model (while being eaten alive by mosquitos!). Chantelle has proven to be one of the most aware and caring people that I know, always going the extra mile. She always strives to make everyone feel included, and welcomes people into her home. She deeply cares about social justice, and equality for all. She is brave. She is fierce. She is intelligent. She is beautiful.

Urban Photoshoot with the Hermana

35

Hey peeps! I’m back, and I’m so excited to start blogging again! My brain has WAY too many ideas, so I constantly add them to my future blog post lists (yes I have a few lists), to keep my sanity.

Kevin and I have had a great summer so far. My lovely parents came for a two-week visit. We got to visit a bunch, and my dad and Kevin built a new deck in our backyard. After my parents left, we went travelling for a month to Thailand, Vietnam, and Cambodia. We had an amazing time (it was SOOO hot there!), and I can’t wait to share pictures from the trip with you! It’ll be a while though, so just be a little patient. I’m not quite done sharing our West Coast trip with you yet…

Since we’ve been back, we have socialized a lot, catching up with our friends. I went back to my casual job, we’ve gone to the dog park, enjoyed several walks and a summer bonfire, along with some delicious s’mores. And of course, let’s not forget about the crazy jet lag I experienced coming home! Talk about messing up your internal clock!

You might be a little confused about the pictures that I’m posting today, as they are very different from anything I ever post. So let me explain. I’ve decided that I would really like to get into photographing people more. I realize that the only way to get better at something is to study and practice it, so I have made it a goal for myself to start practicing, practicing, and practicing some more. I know these pictures are far from perfect, but I’m still proud of them for where I’m at. I decided that I would like to share my practice photoshoot sessions with you.

I shot the following pictures about a week ago. This beautiful individual is my sister-in-law. She’s an intelligent and determined person, always working for social justice and equality. Although if you ask me, I think she could do modelling as a side job. πŸ˜‰

One last thing. I can’t get over how much I love these two songs. I have been listening to them a lot lately. Perhaps some of you will like them too.
